On June 11th I shared my thoughts on strategies to get unstuck within this group that I cherish. I lean towards sharing my own experiences when exploring deepdives on personal development related matters.
When I share such things here, I have grown accustomed to trust the following five benefits to occur:
1) My writings are going to inspire at least one of you in this group. That’s a win, especially if it drives you to a winning formula of action + change = positive transformation!
2) I am going to inspire myself to change for the better. I tend to share problems or concerns that I’m working through myself.
3) My Ego is going to be pissed off that I am furthering my ability to not listen to, or follow, its guidance. Why? Because I do my absolute best to write from my soul rather than my Ego’s desires. I’m not perfect at this, but get a little bit better at this desire with each post. My Ego is against this form of transformation.
4) I feel good knowing that I am doing my part to provide a source of inspiration that rivals the negative crap that we are all being spoonfed via social media.
5) I experience joy. Inspirational writing brings me joy at a higher frequency than just about anything else .
So, I am very excited to share a big breakthrough that started from that post June 11th. Right after I wrote it, I called my decades long inspirational best buddy Patrick Combs for an intellectual deepdive on my stuckness.
A few minutes after, my wife got home, so I was able to continue the conversation with a second trusted person. Sharing your scrambled thoughts is often a good perscription for clarity.
I then reached out to my buddy Chris Duggan allowing me to double down on my own newly formed thoughts and his valuable feedback.
What resulted from this short-term journey of self-awareness was not what I expected.
First, some context. I had been preoccupying my thoughts with a big business decision that I had been working on for weeks, pretty much religiously every day.
Result number one is that I stuck that project in a drawer and haven’t touched it since. Instead, I picked up the one project that brings me the most joy that I’ve been avoiding the longest. This is completing my script.
If this is the first time you’re hearing of this from me, in review, I began writing an inspirational script in my mid-30’s in 2005. I had a very clear vision for what I wanted to write. So, it just came down to execution right? After all, I am a bit of a dreamslayer right? Well…..
My initial inspiration carried me pretty far. I wrote 50% of my vision in just the first few weeks (5 out of 10 chapters). Very much on brand for me. I get inspired and then I do cool shit. Well….
Then a weird thing happened. My desire to complete my script took a unexpected turn. I did’t touch it for years. This turned into decades.
Occasionally, fueled by newfound spats of inspiration, I would sit down to work on it. However, all I would really do is spend time editing what I already wrote. However, what I did notice even from these lame attempts, was that even this form of procrastination was incredibly inspiring. It brought me a immense amount of joy.
Unfortunately, for some reason I will likely never fully understand and could not fathom in real time either, I would stop and go years without touching it. This was my pattern.
That all changed on June 11th. My post that day, and the resulting conversations I had around it, triggered a desire to change the above mentioned pattern.
However, it is worth noting that while these things were of major importance, there was a catalyst that I can now point to that occurred just few days prior. It catapulted me into a zone of self awareness which pushed me towards this major shift. It was a simple quote that I heard somewhere. It was this:
“The magic you desire resides in the work you are avoiding!”
Reading this, in combination with my lifelong desire to pursue that which inspires me, hit me like a sledgehammer in my face. For some reason, I was avoiding doing the work even though I loved it! This is the exact opposite of what I have done to achieve every dream of significance in my life and how I’ve coached countless others to do the same.
I could finally see my stuck point clearly, even if I still don’t fully understand why it occurred.
I am very pleased to report that in less than two weeks, I have completed my script. This means that I wrote the final five chapters in just 14 days after the first five chapters took me 20 years.
Not sure what I’m gonna do with it next, cause I am genuinely aware that I’ve already derived 90% of the joy from the project, simply from writing and completing it. I just felt compelled to share this win with each of you.
If you’ve read this far, I will say that I consider this achievement of more significance than any other dream that I’ve achieved to date.
P.S. - On interesting antidote to the story , is the photo that accompanies it. I staged this photo after investing in a special anti-glare laptop to finish my script on my lanai in Hawaii with its great view of the Pacific Ocean as my backdrop and inspiration. I vividly remember being so inspired that day. I staged this photo because I was convinced I would go on to finish my script within months. The date was August 3, 2023. Well….
I would never spend a single minute working on my script from that beautiful spot, nor would I use that laptop to type a single letter of it.
Resistence is a powerful force.
Does any of this sound familiar to something you’re avoiding in your life?
