He's not just my attorney, he's basically my consigliere.

Day 44 of 60 | Bonjour, Paris! 🇫🇷✨

My wonderful corporate lawyer of 25 years, François Laugier, and his wife Jenn invited Lori and me to their home in Avignon, Provence to celebrate Thanksgiving.

François has been by my side through just about every business I’ve ever dreamed up. He’s not just my attorney, he’s basically my consigliere. If I ever start a family crest, his silhouette might need to be on it.

For years, we traded dinners back and forth in the Bay Area when François was still practicing in Redwood City, and now here we are, many years later, visiting them on their beautiful property in the south of France.

The train ride down was a smooth, countryside bullet train that whisked us from bustling Paris to Provence in just 2.5 hours. And this morning, before heading back, we spent a little time wandering the postcard-perfect village of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence.

Charming streets, sun-washed stone buildings, cafés with locals lingering over their espressos… it’s the kind of place that instantly slows your heartbeat a few beats per minute. Lori and I wandered like happy tourists, soaking in every detail of a town that feels straight out of a French daydream.

This is our second weekend in a row journeying outside Paris, both to celebrate Thanksgiving, both to spend time with dear friends, and it has been exactly the break from school we didn’t know we needed.

Key lesson: Long friendships deepen when you show up across the miles.
