Interesting development on my health journey.

Interesting development on my health journey.

Since I came off my 40 day sugar only diet, I have been intermittent fast most days. This means, I have my first meal around noon and it usually consists of a lean 6 to 8 ounces of protein with vegetables. Around 3 PM, I have a snack consisting of only fruit usually from the berry family. Then, between 5 and 6 pm, I enjoy a dinner basically repeating what I had for lunch - just a lean protein and vegetables. On the days that I don’t intermittent fast till noon I have fruit only for breakfast.

I don’t eat after 6:30 PM. I don’t snack. I drink plenty of water throughout the day. So, how fo you think my body has responding to this new routine?

Due to the weight training and the added protein daily, I’m getting leaner and more cut. While looking in the mirror confirms this, I can also measure this in more tangible ways through my body fat, weight loss, and with measuring tape. For instance, I’m now down to 212 pounds which is just 2 pounds away from my original goal. I haven’t weighed this since my sophomore year in college. I feel great and I like the way I look.

My strength has also increased dramatically. When I started weight training two months ago, my trainer would have me to do a farmer’s carry walking while carrying two 35 pound dumbbells for two minutes. I could barely do it. Now, I can do this with two 75 pound dumbbells. That’s tremendous progress!

While the benefits mentioned above are awesome and something I definitely want to continue, I have noticed that my resting blood sugar measurement is creeping back up. You may remember that one of the huge results from my 40 day sugar only diet was the significant lowering of my resting blood sugar and average score throughout the day.

My resting blood sugar taken every morning had dropped an astounding amount from 99 to 81 with a personal best of 79. Well, after ten days of eating the above way that most nutritionist and health gurus alike, recommend, it’s already creeped back up to 86 and is climbing. My average daily blood sugar score has also gone up eight points from a low of 103 to 111. This is not insignificant. Am I in the danger zone? No. Heck I would’ve bragged about these scores just two months ago. However, they are worth paying attention to.

I plan to meet with Chris later this week to discuss this and what, if anything, we should do about it. As I am sure we can all agree, type two diabetes is a symptoms disease. My goal has never been to simply manage the symptoms. I want to eradicate the disease within my body altogether. So, while everybody else focuses on reducing spikes, I’m on a quest for a permanent solution. This takes experimentation and a fair amount of discipline.

My question for Chris will be, how can I continue? The gains that I’m enjoying from a protein based diet with significant weight, training and daily exercise, while still staying on a path of no more diabetes symptoms.

I will let you guys know what we come up with, but in the meantime, it’s OK to say….I don’t know!

Key lesson: Interesting development on my health journey.

Summary: Off the sugar diet and now intermittent fasting; an interesting health development.
