Mid-Week Inspiration
When it comes to taking action on our desires, one of biggest lies we can tell ourselves is that, “I’ve tried everything but nothing has worked”.
If you’ve arrived at this conclusion in your mind and you are sharing this narrative with everyone that is willing to politely listen, then you are officially mentally stuck.
You are not strategically stuck. You are strategically close minded, But that’s actually OK, because that’s not the problem you need to address first anyway.
If this is where you’re at (I’ve been there too many times to count), another strategy to try out is not what you actually need to get unstuck. You need to change the story that is in your head and the narrative you’re speaking out loud.
For instance, The story I told myself about working out the last 18 months was negative. Narrative wise, I railed against everyone in my life trying to be an expert on health and fitness. I actually offered my wife a $20 bet to not respond to any request for advice on health and fitness at Thanksgiving dinner. That’s how tired and close minded I was of hearing everybody’s expert strategies on how to lose weight while stuffing their faces with Turkey and pies. (And yes, she won the bet, despite being asked twice about the subject.)
The new story that I tell myself in 2022, that I actually picked up from a member of this group (thank you Rachel Wayte), is this, “I never regret a workout!”
After pondering this for a couple of days while on my morning “willpower walks” I found that it was true. I don’t ever regret a workout. In fact, I love my morning walks! The beauty is astounding and I just feel so damn good! Who needs willpower for such a thing?
With this new found mindset, I also found that I don’t regret eating clean.
These two things made so much sense to my mind, my heart, my soul and even my nervous system, that I turned them into beliefs. These new beliefs do not require Amazing efforts of willpower Which my past story grabbed on to.
Now, when I wake up in the mornings I am conditioned to take action. I put my sweats on, I throw on my sneakers, and I’m out the door going on a 90-minute power walk.
All the thoughts that used to stop me are no longer there. You know the thoughts I’m talking about.
“I think I’ll just stay in bed a little longer and maybe look at social media for a while longer.”
“It’s too cold out today, I think I’ll just stay inside.”
“I’ve got a lot of work to do, I’m just gonna get to it instead of working out.”
“Working out sucks!”
Excuses galore!!!!
Willpower doesn’t stand a chance against such thoughts long term.
It’s often not about your strategies. It’s most often the mental game. Find a way to change the story in your head, and the narrative that keeps coming out of your mouth, and you’ll discover true change.
And with a little commitment sprinkled on top, along with the implementation of some decent strategies, you may find that your desires are your reality.
Happy Wednesday!
