They are the days that I suffer.

Day 31 of My 60 Day Sugar Only Diet

A few weeks before I started this diet, I finally committed to regular strength training. I was resisting it big time! I have never been a fan of lifting weights.

How much so?

I had a custom gym built at both of my properties in Hawaii. Spared no expense getting the best equipment.

How many times did I use either gym?

The embarrassing answer is that I can count on two hands how many gym sessions I had in five years. In fact, if I didn’t count the six wellness retreats I hosted at my property that required all of us going into the gym every day, the number would drop to zero.

That’s how much I resisted weight training!

Knowing I would not commit to going into the gym without accountability, I chose to hire a trainer who lives in my building. Strategy wise this, was to make it super convenient and to eliminate all excuses like, sorry Mr. Trainer, I can’t come today because I got a flat tire!

My trainer, whom my subconscious calls “The Beast”, trains me for one hour, 3x per week. We lift on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays after I wrap up my work day at 4 pm. Wednesdays are leg day!

For those of you who lift weights regulary, leg day is the day most people don’t look forward to. In fact, a lot of body builder types skip it altogether cause of how inherently brutal they are. Something about working out the leg muscles just lands different!

Not my trainer. The Beast looks forward to leg days. They are the days that I suffer. How hard are they? Let me give you two frames of reference:

1) I regulary take a nap after my leg day sessions. I’m sure you’re thinking, I love naps! What’s the big deal Eric. Well, I don’t take naps. And, I sure as hell don’t take them at 6 PM at night. I take these naps because my body is incapable of doing anything else after leg days! 😬

2) After the last leg day, I stumbled up to the front desk attendant at my gym, and asked her to call me a taxi cause my legs were buckling. Out of concern, and a but of confusion, she said, “the person in the lobby to this building can help you with that!”

I said, I live in this building, just four floors down the elevator (which was 40 feet away).

She laughed in recognition and replied, “Was today leg day Mr. Lochtefeld?”

How did everyone know this about leg days but me? 🤣

Joking aside, my addition of strength training 🏋️‍♀️ has hands down been my best decision for my health in 2025. The gains in just eight weeks have been remarkable. If you are resisting it, I highly recommend that you suck it up and get in the gym!

And, don’t you dare skip leg days!!!!!! 😎
