Four years living on the Big Island of Hawaii has reminded me of the significance of having an abundance mindset versus a scarcity mindset. Let’s explore together.
Abundance is all about proactively managing choices and creative problem-solving. An abundance mindset allows you to see possibilities, even at time when resources are limited. You believe that things will work out and that the mysterious energy of the Universe will provide.
I have noticed that people with abundant mindsets tend to be optimistic, generous, and resilient. They also tend to have good judgment and, dare I say, good luck! Unsuprisingly, they also tend to be wealthy, or well on their way to become so.
Scarcity mindset is driven by fear that there will never be enough of the things you need. You m believe that resources are limited. You convince yourself that you are being responsibly frugal, when what you are really doing is prompting the Universe to think that you want, need or deserve less.
I have noticed that people with a scarcity mindset seemingly manifest more and more financial problems on an ongoing basis. They tend to be pessimistic, often display poor judgement and dare I say, are unlucky. They count on landing the “big deal” that will catapult them to riches! While they desire to stop being financially stressed all the time, they have adopted it as their identity within their own mind.
Many with scarcity mindset tend to publically dismiss money as unimportant and even pick on friends and family who have it. They draw lines to joy and happiness that do actually exist, but not for them. They are so obsessed with money, in such unhealthy ways, that it actually gets in the way of their own happiness and joy.
Scarcity has us running from what we don't want while abundance has us running toward the things we do. In my humble opinion, it is very difficult to become a successful Dreamer with a scarcity mindset. The Universe tends to give people what they believe. It doesn’t differentiate between delivering scarcity or abundance.
Why am I bringing this up as it relates to Hawaii? Well, because I have learned that Hawaii is a place that many people with scarcity mindset escape to from the mainland or other places in the world. They come seeking a better quality of life. They romanticize Hawaii as a paradise compared to the environment they come from or the situations they were in. This is very sound logic, as it can be all these things and more.
However, if you bring a scarcity mindset to Hawaii, based on what I have seen, it will eat you up and spit you out. If you are not on vacation, life can be hard here. High levels of grit are required. You may last a few years but you will likely leave to seek easier pasteurs. Or, you may stay, but give up on your dreams, embrace and settle for “survival mode”. I have seen both variations, and as s fellow Dreamer, these results make my heart bleed for the individuals. I often try my best to help, but run up against their scarcity mindset and their own resistance to acknowledge it. It is so engrained that my help doesn’t move the needle.
I am grateful that I discovered, embraced and nourished an abundant mindset early in my life. It has supported my dreams just as much as other core attributes like belief, courage and determination. In all honesty, it may be the secret sauce to my success.
If in reading this, you’re feeling uneasy, anxious, judged, a little self-righteous or totally pissed off, I strongly encourage you to do some research on these two mindsets (and hopefully forgive me for shinning a bright light on this). There’s so much great information out there, including incredible books and philosophies that could help you turn the limiting belief of scarcity into an empowering belief of abundance. I just bought copies of “Rich As Fuck” by Amanda Frances by recommendation of my best friend for two mentees of mine here in Hawaii.
If you’ve been reading my posts in this group over the years, you know that what’s in my heart is inspiration and transformation. Inspiration for me is like oxygen and I don’t just want transformation for myself, I want it for you too.
If you can look in the mirror and admit to yourself that you have a life-long scarcity mindset, I hope this post will inspire you to transform your mindset about money. I am not calously judging you, I am trying to inspire you at the risk of losing our relationship. I believe that it’s worth the risk. I believe in you. I also believe that abundance awaits you if you do the work to shift your mindset.
