I’m not a tough love guy. I believe that people need encouragement. However, this does not stop me from hearing a limiting belief when one is spoken or written, and taking action.
In my post yesterday, I mentioned wishing I had the Superhero power of my encouragement working 100% of the time. If I did, I could use it to help people live their dreams more often!
While I haven’t earned this one YET 😎, I have developed another lesser power for sure. I call it my Invisible Highlighter!
What is my Invisable Highlighter? When I’m listening to someone talk about their dreams, a desire or their journey to follow their bliss, time slows down when I hear a limiting belief. This is when my Invisible Highlighter comes out.
I don’t interrupt. That would be rude. I also don’t judge, as that would be offensive to my values cause I know it’s not from their soul. It’s not who they really are, or want to be! It doesn’t define them! It’s from the uninvited roommate in their head. More on this below.
Instead of judging or interrupting, I reach into my pocket and quietly pull out my Invisible Highlighter. For just a millisecond, I see the limiting belief floating like a dark cloud over the presenters head. The floating words are never misquoted or added to by me. They are 100% accurate to what was said, as if I’m a professional stenographer with a photographic memory. I then use it to highlight the words in yellow, bringing light to the darkness.
Why bother? Cause now it’s an opportunity. An invitation of sorts. A gift from the Universe to take my best shot! To inspire a Dreamer to awaken!
I then return to the conversation and patiently wait for an opening to reflect the limiting belief back to its presenter as gently as possible. The highlighted words stay there, floating, like a beacon for a boat lost at sea.
There is incredible power in a person hearing back their own words, especially if they are a limiting belief. But not if it’s used like a lawyer would, trying to expose a person to win a case. It requires empathy, a soft touch.
It’s an opportunity to help that person grow by inviting them to become self aware that they have a false belief that will only ever bring consequences into their life. No benefits whatsoever!
Now, not everyone wants to hear their own limiting beliefs reflected back to them. I’m super aware that taking this risk can cost me a friend, a customer, a family member or an admirerer.
“Fuck that guy!” they think, “all I was looking for was for was a little encouragement. How dare he!”
The primary weapons of our uninvited critic, the roommate in our head (also known as our Ego) are fear, doubt and resistance. Turning a thought into a false belief with consequences is its Superhero power.
This is why I desire the opposite Superhero power. Cause after coaching 200 people over the last five years and inspiring 10,000+ to discover and pursue their dreams in my 30’s, the evidence is overwhelming.
Beliefs guide our actions!
I’ve spent a lifetime fighting a war most people don’t even know they are participating in. The bad news is that the Ego is winning! The good news is that I know with every fiber in my soul, that it is a winnable war! But I can’t win it alone - unless of coarse, I can acquire my desired Superhero power!
I’m gonna keep fighting this good fight till I draw my last breath. Being in this group means we are in the same army. That we are all warriors!
Tactics will change and evolve. But know this, I’m gonna use every weapon in my arsenal, including my Invisible Highlighter!
