If you’ve spent a sunset Happy Hour with me at Bliss Island this year, chances are you’ve asked me what I’m drinking. Since it’s not on the Bliss Bar menu you just have to know!
If this happened, chances are even stronger that I had our Mixoligist pour you a glass made exactly as I take it - over lots of ice with an orange slice and an orange peel. After a cheers, I tell you this story:
Last summer, a new friend offered to buy me a drink at his wonderful resort, but I apologetically declined. I explained that I am pre-diabetic and need to watch my sugar intake. I had already had two drinks. He looked very suprised and said, “Nobody’s told you?”
He then turned to his bartender and said, “Two Magics please!”
What’s a Magic? I innocently asked.
My buddy looked me in the eye and said, “Trust me, I’m about to change your life for the better my friend!”
He then proceeded to teach me about the apparently secret world of very high-end Tequila. No Casamigos 1942, Don Julio or Petron. We’re talking the really good stuff! High-end Agave Tequila!
He enthusiastically explained the benefits. “Anejo Tequila has no carbs, no sugar, and fewer calories than wine, beer, or cider. There are 97 calories and no carbs in a 42 g shot of 100% tequila. It’s not a depressant and you don’t get a hang over from drinking it!”
A rather compelling presentation but I quickly protested, “I don’t like Tequila. The last time I had It, I was an 18 year old college student doing poppers in a shady nightclub in Tijuana. I had way too much and had to run to the bathroom to throw up. While in the bathroom, I was acosted by a guy with a knife. He yelled at me in Spanish to give him all the money left in my wallet. Apparently it was not ok to throw up in his bathroom. He was legitimately angry! Not exactly the kind of bathroom attendant one experiences in the States. When I woke up the next day unscathed, but seriously hung over and a lot lighter in the wallet, I promised myself to never touch that crap again!”
Not expecting to hear this story from his new Personal Development Coach, he set those questioning thoughts aside and said, “Yaeh, that’s something altogether different. You need to try Magic .”
I tried it and then proceeded to have two more. Best part was, I didn’t throw up and nobody put a knife to my throat when I used the bathroom after. A far superior experience than that fateful night in Tijuana 33 years ago.
About a month later, he showed up at my resort with a really nice bottle of Codigo 1530 Origen Extra Anejo. He taught me to drink it over lots of ice with an orange peel
I liked the Codigo Reposado version (Magic) he served me at his resort, but I REALLY liked the Anejo version he gifted me even better! After one sip, I was hooked! I’ve been on a bliss journey to learn about and try the world’s finest Anejo Tequilas ever since!
I’m still just a babe in the woods, but here are my recommendations. It should be noted that I’m saving the really expensive stuff (it’s an expensive hobby) for the right moments!
But after a fair amount of experimentations, I really like all five of these. They are in order of my preference.
If you are a fan too, what brands do you recommend?
